Morton, J.E., L/Cpl., 1944

In Tynemouth (Preston) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 3657819 Lance Corporal John Edward Morton serving with the 1st Battalion South Lancashire Regiment who died 02/09/1944.

The headstone reads:

In loving memory of my dear husband
L/Cpl. John Edward Morton
So. Lancs. Regt.
died of wounds 2nd Sept. 1944 aged 28 years.

He was the husband of Minnie Morton, of North Shields.

John Edward Morton enlisted with the South Lancashire Regiment, serving with the 1st Battalion. Having seen action with the Battalion during the battle for France and Belgium in 1940, the battalion took up Home Defence Duties, before embarking on an extensive training programme for Operation Overlord, where it would take part in the Normandy Landings as part of the first assault waves. Lance Corporal Morton died on the 2nd September 1944 aged 28, probably being evacuated back to the UK after being wounded in action. His grave is Sec.J. R.C. Grave 2764.
