Petty Officer William Garfitt, R.N., aged 23, of 4 Cawthorne Terrace, Preston Village, North Shields, has been mentioned in despatches for distinguished service during the D-Day landings last June.
The younger son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Garfitt, he has been in the Royal Navy for four years, and before joining the Service he was employed as a motor mechanic by Gray Bros, North Shields.
A native of the town he was educated at Ralph Gardner School."
