Sgt. Armstrong was killed when Short Stirling I W7500 MG-B of 7 Squadron was lost on a mission to Essen. The Stirling was shot down by a Luftwaffe night fighter, flown by Major Gunther Radusch of II./NJG2, crashing into the sea off the Dutch coast at 02.25 hours with the loss of all eight crew members.
