Brown, G.A., AM2., 1919
In Cologne Southern Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 53103 Air Mechanic 2nd Class George Atkinson Brown, serving with the Royal Air Force who died 12/01/1919.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

George was born in Backworth in January 1894, the son of Peter and Annie Brown.

By the time of the 1911 Census he was a 17 year old apprentice mason living with his widowed mother, who owned a general dealer's shop, and 3 older sisters at Lane Cottage, Backworth.

George joined the R.A.F. (unable to confirm date) and at the end of hostilities was an Air Mechanic 1st Class serving with 207 Squadron. Because of his rank George may have flown on operations with the squadron which was equipped with Handley Page 0/400 heavy bombers. The squadron moved to Merheim in Germany as part of the Army of Occupation in January 1919 and returned to the UK in August of the same year.

Unfortunately George died on active service (no cause given) on 12/01/1919.

George Atkinson Brown is remembered in Backworth on B1.01
