Travers, J.W., A/Smn., 1915
On the Helles Memorial is the name of Tyneside Z/1097 Able Seaman (Higher) James William Travers, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 04/06/1915.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

James was born on 20th September 1893. He was working as a miner living at 11, Lowstead, Backworth when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on 5th November 1914. His next of kin is noted as his mother, Mary Ann of Preston Road, Tynemouth and this was later changed to his wife, Jeannie living at 1, Chapel Street, Shiremoor.

James joined the 3rd platoon, "A" Company of the Collingwood Battalion on 4th February 1915 and was posted as missing assumed killed in action in Gallipoli on 4th June 1915.

James William Travers is remembered in Backworth on B1.01 and B1.03
