Taylor, W., A/Smn., 1917
In Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel is the Commonwealth War Grave of Tyneside Z/4414 Able Seaman William Taylor, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 25/02/1917.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

William was born on 24th October 1882. He was working as a grocer living with his wife, Annie at 10, Prudhoe Terrace, Backworth (later changed to 20, Melrose Avenue, Backworth) when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on 8th May 1915.

He joined the Nelson Battalion on 20th August 1915 and was hospitalised in Gallipoli on 30th August 1915 suffering from Enteric Fever which led to him being invalided to the UK on 21st October 1915.

On 9th November 1915 a letter was received from his wife stating that William had been ill with Dysentery and Enteric and had lost his memory. He had been sent home from Blandford on 4th November 1915 and was found by her brother lying on his kit bag in the middle of the road at 6 a.m. She asked for assistance and enclosed a doctor's certificate.

William was posted to the Hood Battalion in France on 25th November 1916 and was killed in action on 25th February 1917.
