The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 24/04/1916 reports:

A Soldier's Suicide in Newcastle.
At the Newcastle Infirmary on Saturday night, Mr. Alfred Appleby held an inquest on Charles William Marshall, 23, of Seaton Sluice, a private of the 29th Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish Reserve) who was found in a lavatory of the 1st Northern General Hospital on Friday hanging, by a scarf round his neck, to the feed pipe of the water system.

Evidence by Sgt.Major J. Trimmer and Pte. W.P. McPherson, of the R.A.M.C. showed that Marshall was suffering from chronic constipation and mental debility. He was morose and scarcely every spoke to anyone, but latterly, for no apparent reason, he was constantly saying to himself 'Oh, dear me!' He was missed from the ward by a Sister, and upon a search being made he was found dead, as stated.

The young widow said Marshall had been strange in his ways for a good few months past.

The jury returned a verdict of 'Suicide by hanging himself whilst in a depressed state of mind.'
