In Gordon Dump Cemetery, Ovillers-La-Boiselle, Somme, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 21/43 Sergeant J. Brown, serving with the 21st (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 01/07/1916.

In Seghill (Holy Trinity) Churchyard) is a family headstone which reads:

Until the day dawn
In loving memory of
George
the dearly loved son of
George & Margaret Brown
of Seaton Delaval
who died July 8th 1918
aged 33 years.
Also Sergt. Joseph their son
and beloved husband of
Dorothy Brown
who fell in action July 1st 1916
aged 34 years.
Also the above
Margaret Brown
who died April 18th 1920
aged 64 years.
Also Jane, their daughter
and dearly loved wife of
Frank Roberts,
who died September 12th 1928
aged 51 years.
Also the above
George Brown,
who died June 28th 1933
aged 82 years.

Soldiers Died in the Great War states that Joseph Brown was born in Newcastle on Tyne and enlisted in North Shields.

Ron Carson has provided the following:

Joseph was born in the first quarter of 1882 at Shieldfield, Newcastle upon Tyne, the son of George of Seaton Delaval and the husband of Dorothy (nee Wood) of 1 Jubilee Terrace, Seaton Delaval, whom he married in the second quarter of 1905 at Tynemouth. They had four children: George, 24 June 1906; Mary Ann, 11 December 1908; Joseph, 4 November 1910 and William Wood, 30 October 1913.

Joseph enlisted at North Shields with the 21st Battalion (2nd Tyneside Scottish), Northumberland Fusiliers. He was initially reported missing, but his body was found at map reference 57c.X.20.A on 1 July 1916; he was aged 34.

Morpeth Herald 18/05/1917 carries the following:

Sergt. Jos. Brown, 1 Jubilee Terrace, Seaton Delaval, missing since July 1st, is reported killed in action.
