Grieves, J., Pte., 1917

On the Arras Memorial is the name of 242695 Private Joseph Grieves, serving with the York & Lancaster Regiment who died 03/05/1917.

In Seghill (Holy Trinity) Churchyard) is a family headstone which reads:

In
Loving Memory of
John
beloved husband of
Jane Grieve
of Melton Terrace New Hartley
who died May 24th 1918,
aged 59 years.
Their son
Pte. Joseph Grieve, 2/5 Y.L.
was killed in action in France
May 3rd 1917 aged 22 years.
The above Jane Grieve died
May 5th 1934 aged 73 years.

Joseph enlisted at Whitley Bay and served with the 2/5th (T.F.) Battalion, ‘D’ Coy York & Lancaster Regiment and took part in the attack from Bullecourt on the Hindenburg Line on 3rd May 1917. He was the son of Mrs Jane Spoors Grieve of 45 Astley Road, Seaton Deleval although he lived in Bromley.

The CWGC gives his name as "Grieves" but it is "Grieve" on the headstone.
