He was the son of Mary and the late Amos Nicholson, of 60, Melton Terrace, New Hartley.

Morpeth Herald 01/02/1918 carries a brief obituary:

Private W. Nicholson, New Hartley, of the Scottish Rifles, has died of wounds.

He is remembered at New Hartley on N50.02 and N50.04
