Lived at 33, Mitchell Avenue, West Monkseaton. Son of Thomas Swales and Gladys Lylie Doughty.

Killed in the crash of Handley Page Hampden, Serial L4137 of 144 Sqn. RAF, near Scunthorpe whilst on a training flight 20th March 1940.

Buried in CWG, Earsdon, 26th March 1940.

Bomber Command Losses of the Second World War 1939-1940; W.R. Chorley; 1992; Midland Counties Publications; ISBN 0 904597 85 7, gives his name as Dowty and states it was a training flight.
