Angela Conroy has provided the following from the Burial register:

Lawrence James Welch lived at 15 Wark Avenue, Grange Estate, Shiremoor. He was serving with the 5th (Hackney Bn) The Royal Berkshire Regiment. He died in the Drill Hall, Victoria St, Consett, Co. Durham and was buried on 9th November 1940.

The Evening Chronicle Thursday, 06/11/1941 contains the following:

In Memoriam
ON ACTIVE SERVICE
Welch (of Shiremoor) Lawrence J. Welch, Royal Berkshire Regiment, in loving memory of my dear husband, who died November 6th 1940.
He bid no one farewell.
He did not say goodbye,
His soul had flown before we knew,
But memories never die,
Ever remembered by his wife and father.

His name does not appear on a local war memorial.
