The News Post Leader 13/04/1995, 50 Years Ago, 16/05/1945 reports:

"The first Nelson Village soldier to fall into enemy hands and the first to be released, Pte. Joseph Leighton, who served with the Green Howards in Norway, and has been a prisoner of war in Poland for five years, was given a lively home-coming party by the villagers, in the Co-operative Hall, Cramlington."
