On the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, is the name of 13788 Private Walter Ballantyne Gowland, serving with the 9th Bn. Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 03/08/1916.

He was the son of Mrs Mary Hertweck, of 110, Salisbury Street, Cowpen Quay, Blyth.

Morpeth Herald 08/09/1916 carries a brief obituary:

Private Walter Ballantyne Gowland (better known as Hertwick) [sic]), of 110 Salisbury Street, Blyth, killed in action on August 3rd. He was only 18 years of age.

An "In Remembrance" notice was published in Blyth News 04/08/1921

He is remembered in Blyth on B42.01 and B42.24
