In Etaples Military Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 4204 Serjeant Walter Dodd, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 02/11/1916.

The following notes on Walter Dodd have been submitted by John Grainger

Walter Dodd was born at Clintbourne, Falstone, Northumberland. His father William was born at Hopehouse, Greystead, a farmer and rural postman, his mother Barbara was born at Stokoe, Thorneyburn, sister Barbara M. was born at Otterburn,and brother Gabriel was born at High Eals, Bellingham.

Walter applied to join Durham County Constabulary 30th May 1914, he was a single man aged 20 years, occupation farm servant, height 5'10, and lived at Bellingham, Northumberland.

He was appointed Durham County Constabulary 8th June 1914 as PC 979, 3rd Class constable. In July 1914 Walter went to Stockton after training.

18.8.1914 he resigned from the Police to join His Majesty's Forces, enlisted Stockton with Northumberland Fusiliers.

10.7.1915 Walter entered his first theatre of war the Balkans.

On Thursday 2.11.1916 Sgt 4204 Walter Dodd, 8th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers died of wounds in France aged 23 years.

He is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. Grave reference XII. B. 2A

At the time of his death his parents were deceased.
