Robson, W.E., Pte., 1916
On the Villers-Bretonneux memorial is the name of 3248 Private William Ernest Robson, serving in the Australian Infantry who died 06/11/ 1916.

Susan Carmichael has provided the following:

William was born in 1881, the son of Thomas and Lydia Sarah Robson.

In the 1891 census the family was living at Lowshield Green, Birtley, Bellingham, Northumberland with Percy Robson, William’s grandfather, who was a farmer.William’s father was also a farmer. Also living there were William’s three brothers and two sisters. His mother, Lydia Sarah (nee Jowett), had already died in 1888. The family also had a house keeper, and three servants.

By the 1901 census the family still lived at the farm, but William’s father, Thomas was remarried to Elizabeth.

Living at the farm were Thomas and Elizabeth, William, and his three brothers and two sisters, and his four half sisters.

By 1911 the family had grown further, Thomas and Elizabeth had six daughters. They all lived at the farm with William and his sister Lydia Jane, and two servants.

William Ernest Robson is remembered in Birtley on B34.01
