In St.Peter's Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave with a family headstone of 4457854 Officer Cadet Thomas Murray, serving with the Durham Light Infantry who died 17/12/1940.

The family headstone reads:

"At peace
where no shadows fall."
Thomas Ormiston Murray,
of Peepy,
died 22nd Jan. 1935
aged 49 years.
Also Officer Cadet Thomas Murray
second son of the above
Born 4 Nov. 1918 - died 17 Dec. 1940
"Quo Fata Vocant"

Thomas Murray's name is included in the draft roll of honour for Bywell on B114.04

He is also remembered at Durham in D47.01 page 92
