On the Runnymede memorial is the name of 1378783 Sergeant John Charles Skelton, serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, who died 10/07/1942.

Sgt Skelton was the rear gunner aboard Vickers Wellington IV Z1324 QT-A of 142 Squadron, which was lost on a 'Gardening' (mine-laying) mission to the Terschelling Gat region, the area codenamed 'Mussels'. The Wellington was shot down by a Luftwaffe night-fighter, flown by Oblt. Ludwig Becker of 6./NJG2 and crashed into the North Sea north-east of Terschelling with the loss of all five crew members.
