In Bari War Cemetery, Italy, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 543612V Lieutenant Stanley Saunders, serving with the South African Air Force, who died 25/05/1944.

Stanley Saunders was born on December 1st 1913; his next of kin is listed as his father, Frederick Saunders, of Allendale, Northumberland. He was a Trooper in the Northumberland Hussars from 1931 to 1936, then became a policeman in the Palestine Police Force until 1941, where he was awarded the GSM.

He joined the Air Force in May 1942 as an Air Mechanic at 100 Air School from May 5th 1942, and then did an Air Observers Course in August 1942 at 75, 48 & 66 Air Schools.

He was posted to 37 Sqn SAAF in March 1944, and is listed a KIA on May 25th 1944, as 'Casualty to Aircraft'.

He spoke English, French and Arabic.

He was killed in Wellington Mk. X JA522 of 37 Squadron, which was lost on a bombing mission to Valmontone.
