Smith, R., A/Smn., 1917
On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of Tyneside Z/1282 Able Seaman Richard Smith, serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 17/02/1917.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

Richard was born on 11th June 1894. He was working as a miner living with his wife, Jessie at 11, King Georges Road, Newbiggin by the Sea when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on 7th November 1914.

He joined the Hawke Battalion on 20th February 1915 and was slightly wounded in Gallipoli on 3rd December 1915.

Richard was invalided to the UK on 22nd July 1916 suffering from boils.

He joined the Howe Battalion in France on 14th December 1916 and was killed in action on 17th February 1917.

Richard Smith is remembered in Newbiggin-by-the Sea on N10.06
