Pyle, H., Pte., 1914-18 (1920)
In the Churchyard of St Bartholomew, Newbiggin by the Sea is the Grave of 25/197 Private Henry Pyle, serving with the 25th (2nd Tyneside Irish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 16/08/1920.

Margaret Burgess has submitted the following:-

Henry, born January 4th 1890 at Monkwearmouth, Sunderland was the son of William Thomas and Dorothy Pyle. In 1891 the family were at Westoe and in 1901 at South Shields.

Henry married Mary Alice Dodds in September 1910. In the 1911 census Henry, Mary Alice and son Stephen, who was born at Bomersund, were living with Mary Alice's parents at 30 East Terrace, Stakeford. Henry was a miner.

He enlisted 19th November 1914 and joined the Northumberland Fusiliers. He was discharged with wounds in 25th April 1917 and was awarded the Silver War Medal in the same year.

Henry and Mary Alice had four other children: David Anderson, born 1913; Marmaduke Dodds; 1915-17; John Henry, born 1918 and Margaret, born 1919.

Henry died in the War Pensions Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne.

He was the recipient of the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
