Baker, J.W., Pte., 1917
In Roclincourt Military Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 18/1206 Private John William Baker, serving with 18th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 10/04/1917.

Margaret Burgess has submitted the following:-

John William was born in Whitehaven in 1875. In 1898 at Newcastle upon Tyne he married Mary Isabella Wardle. In 1911 John William his wife and seven children were living at Melrose Terrace, Newbiggin by the Sea.

He enlisted at Newcastle upon Tyne and joined the Northumberland Fusiliers. He died near Arras, Hautes- Pyrenees, Midi Pyrenees, France.

John William left a wife, Mary Isabella and a large family the youngest not yet two years old.

Recipient of the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

John "William" Baker is remembered in Newbiggin by the Sea on N10.03 and N10.06
