St, Bartholomew's Churchyard

In St. Sever Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 31543 Guardsman Joseph Smith Armstrong, serving with 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards who died 15/12/1918.

In St Bartholomew's Churchyard is a headstone which reads:-

Loving
Memory
of
William
beloved husband of Hannah Armstrong
who died August 8th 1931 aged 57 years
Also Joseph S. Armstrong, son of the
above died from wounds Dec. 15th 1918

Margaret Burgess has submitted the following:-

Joseph Smith was born in 1898 in Maryport, Cumberland the son of William and Hannah Armstrong. In 1911 the family were living at 14 East Terrace Stakeford, Choppington. When he died William and Hannah Armstrong were living at 3 Allan Road, Newbiggin by the Sea.

Joseph died of wounds in the 10th General Hospital France 15th December 1918. He is buried in St Sever Cemetery, section S, plot III, row CC, grave 19 where his parents added Until The Day Breaks and the Shadows Flee Away to his headstone. His correct details are also on the Vis-en -Artois Memorial panel 3 as Smith-Armstrong.

He was the recipient of the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

His name does not appear on the War Memorials in Newbiggin by the Sea or any other local war memorials.
