St. Bartholomew's Churchyard

On Thiepval Memorial is the name of 14633 Private George Armstrong, serving with the 13th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers who died 18/07/1916.

Margaret Burgess has submitted the following:-

George, nickname, ”Geordie Gibb” was the son of John and Martha Armstrong of Robinson Square, Newbiggin by the Sea. He was born 1885 and came from a Fishing family but he worked as a miner. His brother James died in the Anglia Disaster of 1904 and both are remembered on the Grave of John and Martha in the Churchyard of St Bartholomew, Newbiggin by the Sea.

In St. Bartholomew's Churchyard is a family headstone which reads:-

Who was drowned while
Rendering assistance to
The grounded Steamer Anglia
Dec. 8th 1904 aged 39 years

The above Martha Armstrong died
June 28th 1928 aged 78 years

Killed in Action in France
July 18th 1916 aged 31 years

He is remembered at Newbiggin by the Sea on N10.06
