In St. Bartholomew's Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 2208026 Sergeant George Covell serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died 25/08/1944.

The headstone reads:-

In Loving Memory of
Our dear
George Sgt. AC R.A.F. No. 2208026 attached
To 218 Gold Coast Squadron
Beloved son of Joanna & Sidney Covell
Who made the Supreme Sacrifice on the
25th August 1944 age 28 years

At the going down of the sun and in the
morning we shall remember him.

George Covell is remembered at Newbiggin by the Sea as G. Covill on N10.04 and N10.13
