In St. John's Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 27274 Private W.A. Bell, serving with the Yorkshire Regiment who died 24/08/1917.

The headstone reads:

In loving memory of
Signaller William Armstrong Bell
2nd Yorks, beloved son of
Thomas & Eliza Jane Bell,
who died from wounds
received in action in France,
Augt. 24th 1917, aged 20 years.
Christ shall clasp the broken chain
closed when we meet again.
Also Thomas
beloved husband of the above
Eliza Jane Bell
died Novr. 23rd 1929 aged 65 years.
The above Eliza Jane Bell
died 28th May 1945 aged 75 years.

Below this is another small stone which reads:
A Token
Of Respect
From his Uncle & Aunt
Mr. & Mrs. Prudham
And little cousin
Arnold.

Margaret Alllison gives his address as 21 Pont Street, Ashington.

William Armstrong Bell is possibly remembered at Hirst on H62.13
