In the Amara War Cemetery, Iraq is the Commonwealth War Grave of 101757 Sapper Samuel Arthur Round, serving with the Royal Engineers (72nd Field Company) who died 18/12/1916.

Derek Johnstone and Carole Fife have provided the following:

Samuel Arthur Round was born at Cambois, Northumberland in 1886. His parents were Thomas Round, a miner, from Dudley, Worcester and Mary Jane Round from Pittsburgh, USA.

The 1891 Census records Samuel, aged 4, living with his family at 9, New Row, Cambois with siblings Mary 10, Alice Maude 8, Thomas Richard 7, Ester Ann 2, and Sarah 1.

In 1901 his family lived at New Row, Cambois where Samuel was a scholar aged 14. Samuel married Jane Beattie in 1908 which was registered at Tynemouth, Northumberland.

In 1911, Samuel was living at 20, Ridley Terrace Cambois with his wife Jane and son Thomas aged 1. He was employed in the coal mines as a colliery bank labourer.

Samuel’s military records show he enlisted at Blyth, Northumberland and his effects went to his wife Jane.
