Northumberland Fusiliers Badge

Medal Card

On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 19638 Private Thomas George Laverick, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (10th Battalion) who died 07/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone and Carole Fife have provided the following:

Thomas George Laverick was born at Cambois, Northumberland about 1890 to parents Tom Laverick, a coal miner, born at Whitley, and Mary Laverick who was born in Cumberland.

In 1891, Thomas, aged 1 was living in his parents' house at 35, Boathouse Terrace, Cambois. In the census at that time it indicates his father was born at Bedlington, however other census reports record he was born at Whitley.

The 1901 Census shows Thomas was 11 years old and it is assumed he was a scholar. Siblings in the household included Mark 32, Ellen 22, Sarah 20, Peter 18, William 15 and Mary 13. Thomas’s mother Mary died in 1907.

The Laverick family were still living at 35, Boathouse Terrace in 1911 when Thomas was 21 years old and working in the coal mines as a pony putter. Military records show he enlisted at Blyth Northumberland and his effects went to his sister Elizabeth Ann which indicates he was not married.

Thomas George Laverick is remembered in Cambois on C6.02
