Grady, T., Pte., 1915

Northumberland Fusiliers Badge

Medal Card

On the Helles Memorial is the name of 4479 Private Thomas Grady, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (8th Battalion) who died 19/08/1915.

Derek Johnstone and Carole Fife have provided the following:

Thomas Grady was born at Cambois, Northumberland in 1885 and christened at St Wilfrid’s RC Church at Blyth in the same county. His parents were Patrick Grady, a blacksmith and Catherine Grady both from County Mayo in Ireland.

It should be noted all census reports/birth records use the name Grady but CWGC and military records show the name as O’Grady.

In 1891, the Grady family lived at 4, Cowgate, Cambois and Thomas was shown as being five years old. Siblings in the household at this time included John 24, Catherine23, Philip 21, Annie 17, Mary 16, Winifred 12 and Jane aged 8.

The 1901 Census does not show Thomas, who would have been 15 years old, at 4 Cowgate Cambois. Thomas’s father Patrick died in 1909 and the house was taken his sister Mary and her husband William Hedley, a coal miner.

In 1911 Thomas was 25, single and employed as a teacher, living with his sister at 4, Cowgate.

CWGC information shows Thomas as the son of Patrick and Catherine O’Grady of 1, Selbourne Terrace Cambois, Blyth Northumberland and military records indicate his effects went to his mother Catherine showing he was not married.

Thomas Grady is remembered in Blyth on B42.21 and in Cambois on C6.02
