Gibson, F., Pte., 1917

Northumberland Fusiliers Badge

Medal Card

In Huts Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave for 10145 Private Frank Gibson, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers 14th (Pioneer) Battalion who died 28/09/1917.

Derek Johnstone and Carole Fife have provided the following:

Frank Gibson was born at Amble, Northumberland, in 1895 to parents George Gibson, a hewer in the coal mines from Holywell in the same county and Sarah Jane Gibson (nee Harkus) from North Shields.

Information in 1901 shows the Gibson family living at 15, Wallace Terrace, Holywell. Frank at this time was six years old and he had the following siblings: Margaret 7, James 3, Mary 1 and Sarah aged 4 months.

The 1911 Census for this family was difficult to find as the name of Gilson, not Gibson, had been entered into the documentation. Confirmed information shows Frank was aged 16 and was working as a coalminer. His siblings in this census are shown to have the middle name Harkus. The family which included five children lived at 1, Boca Chica at Cambois in Northumberland in three rooms.

Frank enlisted in Blyth Northumberland and CWGC records confirm Frank was the son of George and Sarah Ann Gibson of 1, Boca Chica, Cambois, Blyth, which is probably where he was living when he joined the Army.

All the information indicates Frank was not married.

Frank Gibson is remembered in Cambois on C6.02
