James Day was born at Cambois, (shown as Bedlington on census reports) in 1890 to parents William Day from Benton / Burradon, Northumberland and Florence Day who was born in Shropshire. The 1891 and 1901 Census’s reports show the Day family living at Chapel Row (11 and 10 respectively) where his father William was working in the coal mines as a deputy overman.

In 1901 the household shows James had five siblings including Mathew, 16, Priscilla, 14, Thomas, 13, Nellie, 5 and Robert, 1.

In 1911 James, now 21 years old, was employed as a grocer's assistant.

Military records show James enlisted at Newcastle and do not indicate he was married.
