In Kiel War Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 1098639 Sergeant Robert Allan, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, who died 19/02/1943.

Sgt. Allan was the Navigator on board Vickers Wellington III BJ973 AS-J of 166 Squadron which was lost on a mission to Wilhelmshaven. The Wellington crashed near Flensburg, with the loss of all five crew members.

Wellington BJ973 AS-J had departed Kirmington for Ops Wilhelmshaven

It was intercepted at 1800M over Borkholm, 10km SW of Suderlugum by a Night-Fighter captained by Fw Herbert Altner (V/NJG3) and shot down at 2055 for his 2nd Abschuss
