Elliott, J.S., L/Cpl., 1917

In Tincourt New British Cemetery, Somme France is the Commonwealth War Grave of 23/628 Lance Corporal James Swinney Elliott, serving with the 23rd Battalion (4th Tyneside Scottish), Northumberland Fusiliers who died 25/08/1917.

Derek Johnstone and Carole Fife have provided the following:

James Swinney Elliott was born about 1894 at Cambois in Northumberland. His parents were Mr Swinney (first name not established) and Margaret Gwendoline Elliott. His mother married Daniel Wilson, a coal miner stoneman, in 1900 after the death of his father.

In 1901 James was 7 years old and living at 28, Salisbury Road, Cowpen with his mother, stepfather and stepsister Jane who was 7 months old at this time.

The 1911 Census records James as being 17 years old and working in the coal mines as a landing keeper. He is still living with his family at 38, Boathouse Terrace, Cambois where his stepfather, who was born in Sunderland, was a now a chargeman in the coal mines.

James did not marry and his effects went to his mother Margaret.
