Pattison, W.R., Pte., 1916

On the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, is the name of 20/1346 Private William Redford Pattison, serving with the 20th (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 01/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone and Carole Fife have provided the following:

William Redford Pattison was born in 1895 at Blyth Northumberland to parents Christopher Pattison, a hewer in the coal mines from Blyth and Ellen Pattison from the same town.

In 1901, William aged five, lived with his parents at 27, Gees House, Cambois Northumberland. Also in the household at this time was his younger brother Thomas who was two years old.

Information in 1911 shows William’s family living at 21, Watergate, Cambois, where he is employed in the coal mines as a general labourer below ground, aged 15.

Military information show he enlisted at Bedlington, joined ‘C’ Company on February 25th 1915 and died at the Battle of the Somme. His effects went to his father Christopher indicating he was not married.

Morpeth Herald 17/11/1916 carries the following:
Private W. Redford Pattison, Cambois, is reported killed in action.
