Medal Card

In Mindel Trench British Cemetery, St. Laurent-Blangy is the Commonwealth War Grave of 146179 Serjeant David Ferrell Fenwick, serving with the Royal Garrison Artillery who died 06/06/1917.

Derek Johnstone and Carole Fife have provided the following:

David Ferrell Fenwick was born about 1893 in Cambois, Northumberland to parents John Fenwick, a colliery labourer from Killingworth, Northumberland and Grace Dunsmore (nee Ferrell) Fenwick who was born at Seaton Burn in the same county.

The census in 1901 shows David to be seven years old and living with his parents at 15, Watergate, Cambois with siblings Jane 14, Margaret 14, Arthur 9, John 4 and Mary 3 months.

In 1911 the Fenwick family was still at 15, Watergate Cambois where David, now 17, was shown to be a pupil teacher and his mother, Grace, was recorded as being a school teacher, possibly at Blyth. This is unusual as women teachers at this time were normally single; however, checks show that Grace was a pupil teacher in the 1881 Census when living at 4, Store Row Cambois so she could have been qualified.

Military records show that David enlisted at Blyth, Northumberland and was originally in the Tynemouth Royal Garrison Artillery Territorial Battalion with the service number 606. David does not seem to have married as his effects on death went to his father John Fenwick.

David Ferrell Fenwick is remembered in Cambois on C6.04 and in Blyth on B42.18 B42.24 and B42.36
