On the Tyne Cot Memorial is the name of 10900 Lance Corporal Robert Hedley Wardle, serving with the West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own) who died 27/08/1917.

Derek Johnstone and Carole Fife have provided the following:

Robert was born at Cambois, Northumberland about 1887. His parents were John Wardle, who worked in the coal mines as a hewer, born in Newcastle, and Dorothy Isabella Davidson who was born in Ulgham Grange, Northumberland. In 1891 his family lived at 33, Boca Chica, Cambois.

In 1901 the census shows Robert to have a brother William who was born 1891 and a sister Georgina born in 1903. At this time his family was still living at Boca Chica, Cambois. Robert was aged 14 and employed as a coal trimmer which is assumed to be on the ships which would be carrying the coal away from the local area around the River Blyth.

The 1911 Census indicates his family was living at 17, Store Street, Cambois but Robert was not shown in the household as it was probable he was working and boarding elsewhere. The CWGC records confirm he was the son of John and Dorothy Wardle of 17, Store Row, Cambois, Blyth.

Robert enlisted at Newcastle into the West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales Own) 9th Battalion. His effects to his mother Dorothy suggesting he was not married.

Robert Hedley Wardle is remembered in Cambois on C6.02
