Medal Card

Tyneside Scottish

On the Ovillers Memorial is the name of 20/781 Private Samuel Gibson serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish) 20th Battalion who died 01/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

Samuel Gibson was born at Tanfield, Durham in 1889 to parents Stephenson Gibson from Leadgate, County Durham and Ann Alice Gibson (nee Heron) from Tanfield.

In 1891 when Samuel was aged 2, his family lived at Tanfield Lea, Durham. Additional siblings arrived with Henry born in 1896 at Tanfield and Hannah born in 1901 at Tanfield.

No records could be found for 1901 and 1911. However, his father Stephenson Gibson is listed in the 1911 Summary Book and shown to be living at Fourth Row, Choppington Northumberland. Samuel would have been 22 at this time and possibly living in the same household.

In 1919, his father’s Probate details show he died 26/06/1919 while living at 3, Fifth Row Choppington and his occupation was a winding engineman.

Military records confirm Samuel was born Tanfield Lee, County Durham and enlisted at Bedlington. On his death his effects went to his father Stephenson in 1917 and in 1919 to his sister Hannah. This would indicate Samuel was not married.

Samuel Gibson is remembered in Choppington on C36.01 and C36.04
