On the Loos Memorial is the name of 10627 Private John Hare serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (12th Battalion) who died 27/09/1915.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

John Hare was born about 1876 at Cleator Moor, Whitehaven, Cumberland, to parents John Hare and Elizabeth Hare (nee Fox) both born at Whitehaven. In 1891 the Hare family, which included siblings Samuel, 18, Mary Ann, 12, Francis, 11, Aaron, 7 and Elizabeth, 4 was living at 35, Moor Row, East Hetton Durham. At this time John Hare, aged 14, was employed in the coal mines as a pony driver.

In 1901 John, now 25 and married, was living at Back Street, Scotland Gate, Choppington.

The census in 1911 records that John has been married for 11 years to Margaret and was living at 2, Third Row Choppington. John was employed as a coalminer. At this time they had the following children: Isabella, 10, Charles, 10, Barbara, 6, Effie, 4 and John, 2.

Military records show John enlisted at Bedlington, went to France on 9th September 1915 and that his effects went to his widow upon his death. Information held by CWGC confirm he was the husband of Margaret Hare and that she was lived at 18, Rutter’s Buildings, Scotland Gate, Choppington after his death.

John Hare is remembered in Choppington on C36.01 and C36.04
