On the memorial is the name of Cpl. John Scott of the Northumberland Fusiliers. He came from Pegswood. He fought at Albert, Loos, La Basse, Peronne, Mouchy and Vimy. He was wounded, then returned and fought at the Somme, Arras, and Bapaume. He was awarded the Military Medal in June 1918. He was killed at Bullecourt, and buried at Gommecourt. In October 1920, at a Pegswood Parish Council meeting, his parents were given a medal and an enlarged photograph paid for by public subscription in honour of their son. The dedication on the photograph reads: "In Memoriam. To Mr. & Mrs. Scott, by the members of the Pegswood Parish Council and workmen of Pegswood Colliery, in memory of their dear son Corporal John Scott, M.M., who was killed in action in August 1918 at Bullecourt".
