Sergeant Scrowther was the rear gunner aboard Avro Lancaster I PD278 HA-V of 218 Squadron, which was shot down by a Luftwaffe night-fighter on a mission to Dessau. The Lancaster came down at Marisfield, some 7 miles from Meiningen, with the loss of all seven crew members.
