On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 20/730 Lance Corporal James Cowie, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

The true family name was Crawley. James was born at York Street, Wallsend, the son of the late Edward Crawley and stepson of Harriet Cowie of 256 Yard Row, Bedlington, Northumberland.

He is remembered in Bothal on B48.01 and B48.02
