In St. Andrew's Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 4278261 Fusilier James Richard Purvis, serving with the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 02/05/1941.

The family headstone reads:
In loving memory of
our dear son
James Richard Purvis
9th Batt. Northumberland Fusiliers
killed on active service
2nd May 1941 aged 30 years.

He is remembered in Bothal on B48.01
