Carole Fife has provided the following:
William was born about 1895 in Cramlington. His father was John James Neil and his mother died when he was small. In 1911 the family was living in Back Clayton Street, Bedlington Station and William was pony driver in the colliery. William enlisted in South Shields and joined 2nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry. William would appear to have died in the attack on Le Transloy Ridge.
He is remembered in Bedlington Station on B163.04 and in the D.L.I. Book of Remembrance page 285
