Robert died in 1898, and the following year Marion married William Latty, a miner who lived at Bedlington Bank Top. William appears in the 1911 census as William Latty but it is not known as to whether he was officially adopted. William enlisted in Bedlington and joined 23rd (Tyneside Scottish) Northumberland Fusiliers. He died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

He is remembered in Bedlington Station on B163.04 which also bears the name of his younger step-brother Alexander who died in World War II
