Jeffrey, A., A/Sjt., 1916
In Trois Arbres Cemetery, Steenwerck, Nord, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 23/688 Sergeant Alexander Jeffrey, serving with the 23rd (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 05/11/1916.

Morpeth Herald 17/11/1916 carries a brief obituary:

Sergt. Alex. Jeffrey, Bedlington [sic], has been killed in action.

Alexander was born in Netherton in 1892, one of six children to Walter and Jane Jeffrey At the time of the 1911 census he was living at 26, Back Clayton Street where his widowed mother was working as an agricultural labourer and taking in lodgers to support her family. Alexander was working at the Bedlington Brick Company attached to the colliery. In the summer of 1911 Alexander married Mary Greaves and they had three children, James, Jane and Dorothy. They were living at Ravensworth Terrace, Bedlington Station when he enlisted in the 4th Tyneside Scottish (23rd NF). He died on 5th November 1916, near Armentieres. An article in the 'Blyth News of 07/12/16 quotes a letter to Mrs Jeffrey from the army chaplain who buried him.
