Morpeth Herald 12/10/1917 carries a brief obituary:
ROLL OF HONOUR
ALLEN.- Died of wounds, Sept. 28th, 1917, aged 23 years, Sergt. [sic] John George Allen of Bedlington Colliery.- Sincerely mourned by his uncle and aunt and family, George and Mary Jane Chilton of Bedlington Colliery.
Carole Fife has provided the following:
John was born in 1894 in Bedlington but I can find no trace of his parents. He is named in the census returns as the nephew and foster son of John and Elizabeth Chapman of Ravensworth Terrace, Bedlington Station..
He enlisted in Bedlington and served first in the 12th Btn Northumberland Fusiliers. Then in the 27th Btn (4th Tyneside Irish) with whom he fought at the Battle of the Somme. In the reorganisation after this battle he was transferred to the 24th Btn (1st Tyneside Irish)
He died on 28th September 1917 and is buried in Tincourt New British Cemetery in the Somme valley. This cemetery was only a short distance away from a field hospital so it is likely John died of his wounds in hospital.
Like many who served in Regiments with Irish connections, as well as those who fought in actual Irish regiments, John is remembered in Ireland's Memorial Roll of Casualties of War.
He is remembered in Bedlington Station on B163.04
