Robinson, V.H., Pte., 1916
On the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial is the name of 432573 Private Victor Hugo Robinson, serving with the 49th Battalion Canadian Infantry who died 03/06/1916.

Derek Johnstone and Carole Fife have provided the following:

Victor Hugo Robinson was born 8th January 1891 at Holywell (Seaton Delaval), Northumberland and baptised at Choppington on 21st February 1891. His parents were John Robinson, a mason / bricklayer who was born at Hexham, and Ann Cox born in Bedlington.

In 1891 his family lived at 34, Jubilee Terrace, Holywell, where he was the only child in the household.

By 1901, Victor was 10 years old and his family, which now included a brother Edward aged 9, was living at 51, Sycamore Street, Ashington.

The census in 1911 shows that Victor was working in the coal mines as an underground engineer. He was living with his family at Dawdon New Cottages, Seaham Harbour, Durham.

Victor emigrated to Canada, aged 22, and arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia 3rd April 1913 on route to Edmonton, Alberta where he was to marry Nellie Rosalind Page in 1915. He enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 6th January 1915 when he gave his occupation as a bricklayer and his address as 11816, 65th Street Edmonton.

His military records show he was reported missing on 3rd June 1916 during an attack south of Sanctuary Wood. This was the date which was recorded as the day he died.

The CWGC records show that he was the son of Mr and Mrs John Robinson of 4, West View, Bedlington Station, and husband of Nellie Rosalind Robinson of Vancouver, Canada.
