BEDLINGTON STATION

Tweedy, W.R., Pte., 1917
In Zuydcoote Military Cemetery is the Commonwealth War grave of 39274 Private William Ruddock Tweedy serving with the Lancashire Fusiliers who died 13/09/1917.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

William was born in Blyth in 1880 to Thomas and Sarah Tweedy. The family lived in Cowpen, Blyth for over 20 years, William at first worked as a bricklayer like his father but by 1911 was working as a miner. In 1907 he married Isabella Jane Wood and they had five children, William, Thomas, Eleanor, Annie and Sarah. In 1911 William and his family were living at Gladstone Street, Cowpen Quay, but soon after moved across the river to Bedlington Station.

William enlisted in Blyth into the Northumberland Fusiliers as Private 43412, but was transferred to the 8th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers (probably in the reorganisation after the Battle of the Somme).

He died of wounds in one of the hospitals at Zuydcoote. Death notices were place in the Blyth News 27/09/1917 by Isabella, his mother and brother. 'In Memoriam' notices were placed in the same newspaper on 27/09/1918 by his widow and his brother Tom.

He is remembered in Bedlington Station on B163.04
