Dixon, J.T., Pte., 1916

On the Thiepval memorial is the name of 23/1285 Private John Thomas Dixon, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

John Thomas Dixon, the son of William and Elizabeth Dixon, was born at Allendale Cottages, Wrekenton, Durham in 1887 where John’s father was a miner. In 1891, his family lived at Havelock Place, Backworth when John was about four years old. At the age of 14 in 1901 he was working below ground at a colliery as a brakesman. At this time he was living with his family at 3, Low Allotment, Tynemouth.

In 1911, still single, he was living with his family, including brothers William (age 17) and George Callendar (age 13) at 9, Howard Row, Netherton, working underground as an onsetter. John appears to be single and the address shown when he enlisted was 240, Yard Row, Netherton near to Bedlington in Northumberland.

He is remembered at Bedlington on B15.07
