Tyneside Scottish Badge
Derek Johnstone has provided the following:
George Nesbitt was born in 1897 at Newbiggin / Woodhorn in Northumberland and his parents were James and Jane Nesbitt. His father was born in Jarrow in Durham and his mother at Woodhorn.
In 1901 George’s family, including his sister Margaret aged 7, was living at Hirst, Ashington where his father was a coal miner hewer.
CWGC records show he is son of Mr and Mrs James Nesbitt of 26, Hirst Terrace, Bedlington. This is the same address recorded in the Record of Enlistments where he was living at the time he enlisted. Being only 20 when he was killed it’s unlikely he was married and none of the records checked indicated this.
George enlisted at Cramlington and his military number is shown as 211922 and 21/922. As he served in the 21st Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers his number would have been 21/922. Records seen have used both versions of this number.
His name is given as both "Nesbit" and "Nesbitt".
George Nesbitt is remembered in Bedlington on B15.02, B15.09 and B15.26 page 67
